SKIVA MEDIAADAPTER Does the job, December 6, 2010

While looking for an alternative to Apple’s Component AV and Composite AV Cables each priced at $39, a product from SKIVA appeared on Amazon. Their MEDIAADAPTER combines both for less than the cost of one of Apple’s cables.

The unit is shipped with two AV cables, a USB adapter and the adapter that plugs into the iPad/iPod/iPhone connector. The AV cables plug into the adapter in clearly marked sockets while the USB adapter plugs in between them.

Switches on the unit allow for Composite, Component, NTSC/PAL and 16:9/4:3 aspect ratios. The latter two handy for foreign travel and connecting to older CRT TVs.

Simply plug the adapter in the connector on the bottom of the iPad/iPod/iPhone and Component or Composite cables into the TV. The audio cables are common to both, so if using Component inputs on the TV, connect the red, green and blue cables and the red and white audio cables to the TV. If Composite is being used, connect the red and white audio cables and the yellow video cable.

As of now, Netflix, Youtube and Apple’s iPod and Video apps support video out. It is up to the app developers to support video out, not SKIVA.

The MEDIAADAPTER works as advertised. This is a great product that allows connecting an iPad/iPod/iPhone at home or more importantly, while traveling or going to someone’s home or at work to show videos to a group. Included is a Quick Start Guide that is clearly written.

Customer support? I had a question and sent an e-mail. It was answered almost immediately.

I purchased this composite/component cable to use with my iPod. This cable is simple to use & it works! I just followed the very simple instructions on its Quick Start Guide. The audio/video quality on TV is excellent, just as it plays on the iPod. As I worked around the house, I switched to play my iPod music on TV via this cable & the sound quality is very clear. I also took the cable with me when I visited my friends’ houses to show off the videos I took on my vacation. It also has a USB port for power, so I can charge my iPod directly. I like this product because of its ease of use, its great quality, its portability and also its affordability. The shipping is very quick too, as the product was shipped the very next day after I ordered.

This device works as advertised. As the ads don’t really tell you what exactly the output resolution is, I’ll clear it up here. This device takes video from your iPad and supporting apps and sends it out to your TV using either analog signaling format of composite or component video. Additionally, it sends out audio. The output resolution for either component or composite is either NTSC (720×480) or PAL (720×576), depending on the mode you select. That’s far less resolution than the iPad itself, which is 1024×768, but equal to that stored on a conventional NTSC or PAL DVD, respectively. My 40″ Samsung LCD wouldn’t even go down to that low of resolution for its component inputs, so I had to use the inferior composite signal instead (so check if that matters to you). If you are playing a 1080p movie on your iPad, don’t expect this device to render a very good looking picture on a decent home theater system, even with the better component output option, because the resolution is just too low. But what this little gadget lacks in high definition, it sort of makes up for in compatibility with virtually every TV ever made, except really, really bad ones. If you are looking for high definition for your home theater, forget this and go with Apple’s AV HDMI cable, which can send out iPad 2′s video in a crisp digital HDMI signal at hi-def frequencies (1080p for stills and 720p for movies, although with the newest iOS of this writing and the iPad 2 I think movies are now able to display at 1080p too now). And keep this for those boring stays at low-grade hotels, where you’d like to hook up your iPad to their crappy TV to watch a movie and pass some time.
