I purchased this product at Home Depot but I’m posting the review here. I took it apart to see what was inside and it was interesting. The left USB port uses a few resistors to put voltages on the D+ D- lines that make it compatible with Apple devices. The right USB port uses this special automatic device detection chip (TPS2511):
    [...]

The result is that each side has its own compatibility. Strangely, the packaging doesn’t say anything about this.

    Devices I tested:

    Samsung Droid Charge
    Left: USB Mode
    Right: AC Mode

    ipod Classic 80GB
    Left: charged
    Right: would not charge

    Samsung Galaxy S III
    Left: charged (AC Mode)
    Right: charged (AC Mode)

    Nexus 7
    Left: charged* (AC Mode)
    Right: charged* (AC Mode)

*After the latest SW update (4.2) on my nexus 7, both sides charge in AC mode. Before the SW update, both sides would charge in USB mode, but SW would not indicate that it was charging at all.

For the price, I really wish they would make both sides fully automatic and fully compatible, but it does better than most chargers in attempting to be compatible with as many devices as possible. Also taking it apart required only a screwdiver and nothing was glued together making it easy to open.

This may not be an issue for many people, but before installing this outlet be sure your electrical box is deep enough to accomodate the outlet. It is significantly deeper than a standard outlet and just barely fits in a 2.5″ deep box. It is almost the size of a GFCI outlet! I had to remove the existing 2″ box and install a new 2.5″ cut-in box so the outlet would fit. Even then it is a TIGHT fit. I would have used an even deeper box but there was not enough clearance in this particular wall.

So aside from its space requirements it is well constructed (spec grade?) and works as advertised. No more wall warts! I may install a few more in other parts of the house.

Good Idea, But, September 1, 2012

This is a well build device. Leviton is a World class electrical product company. But, this will not charge the Nexus 7 tablet even though it is rated for 2 amps, which is what the Nexus 7 requires and the reason I chose this one. It does charge my Kindle and other USB devices though. It is easy to install. The connections are pressure plates and not just screw terminals. That way you do not have to loop the wire around the screw, only push it under the plate and tighten the screw. There are several of these devices showing up on the market recently, and most are priced much less. You get what you pay for. I feel more confident leaving this charger powered up all the time where I would not with some of the Chinese import units. This is always available for use. No need to hunt up a wall wart every time.

I have updated my previous three stars to four stars because of a kind reply from a Leviton rep. It appears that this does in fact charge the Nexus 7 but due to a software issue in the Nexus there is no indication that it is being charged. Thank you Leviton.

Thank you for submitting your review on the new Tamper Resistant USB receptacle. The T5630 charger does charge the Nexus but does not indicate charging on the device due to the indicator protocol used by the device. This protocol used by the device is unique. The indicator protocol for the Nexus is being reviewed and addressed. Please email Leviton at ebusiness@leviton.com to discuss further.
